Senior Care for Veterans in Buncombe County
By Asheville Senior Care Guide · Updated July 2026
Veterans and their surviving spouses have access to senior-care benefits and options that most families never hear about, and that go unused simply because no one knew to ask. If you or your loved one served, this page pulls together what is available in Western North Carolina and how to claim it.
The benefit most families miss: Aid & Attendance
The VA’s Aid & Attendance benefit is an enhanced pension that helps wartime veterans and surviving spouses pay for care, whether that is in-home care, assisted living, or a nursing facility. It can add a meaningful amount to a monthly income, and it is chronically underused. Our VA Benefits guide explains who qualifies and how to apply.
The NC State Veterans Home in Black Mountain
Buncombe County is home to one of North Carolina’s state veterans homes, a skilled nursing facility built specifically for veterans:
NC State Veterans Home – Black Mountain
62 Lake Eden Road, Black Mountain, NC 28711
(828) 257-6800 · 100 nursing beds · Accepts Medicare and Medicaid
Beyond the veterans home, many private assisted living and skilled nursing communities in the county welcome veterans and can help coordinate VA benefits. See the full Facility Directory and our Skilled Nursing guide.
Where to get help navigating it
VA benefits are notoriously complex, and the application process for Aid & Attendance trips up many families. Two kinds of help are free: your county Veterans Services Office, which assists local veterans and families with benefit claims at no charge, and accredited veterans service organizations. For anything involving asset planning alongside VA benefits, an elder law attorney who knows VA rules can be worth it.
Do not assume you earn too much to qualify. Aid & Attendance has income and asset rules, but unreimbursed medical and care costs are deducted from income in the calculation, so many families who assume they are over the limit actually qualify. It is worth checking.
